Without getting two much into music
theory in the drum lesson section we will be using 4/4 time.Hence if there are 4 beats per measure the quarter note gets the beat. There are two 8th notes played in the space of one quarter note. If I were playing four quarter notes I would say: 1 2 3 4. If I were to play and space them out I would say 1 Mississippi, 2 Mississippi, 3 Mississippi, 4 Mississippi. That's a second between each number. Obviously if you were using a metronome
it would be either faster or slower. This example is used to see how 8th notes fit in. Now for the same time used, (One second between each number count.) You would play and count : 1 + (said as and) 2+ 3+ 4+. The 1 2 3 4 would fall on the same 1 2 3 4 as the quarter notes. The difference is when you play quarter notes, you only say Mississippi without playing anything while saying it. With the 8th notes, when you say "and" you play those "ands'" or rest if indicated as a rest.
Now if your playing 8th notes on the Hi hat or ride cymbal, you may want to sound tricky. Here is an exercise that will help you do that. Count quarter notes on either your ride cymbal or hi hat and hit that surface of choice every time you say a quarter note. With the opposite hand play two even out notes in between the notes. Hence, when your saying Mississippi your playing what could be deemed as two quick 8th notes, but technically they are 16th notes. Yes, it could even be seen as a triplet with one hand playing the first note and the other two hands doubling up on the second and third notes. Now again, without intruding on the music theory section, I'll keep it brief. When you say tri-ple-let. Just like that all broken up,
you are going to play three even notes. It's not four 16th notes with the last note not being played but a rest taking place. Anyway, you want to look at it when one hand comes down on the one the other hand will shoot off two quick notes before the lead hand comes back down on the 2. Two more quick notes on the snare hand and the lead hand will come down on the three by itself. Two more fired off in between and then the four, and two more on the snare. Now sometimes people play the bass drum on the 1 2 3 4 while the lead hand comes in. Other times people hit the snare on the 4 and continue hitting the two quick notes right after that to keep some sort of beat going. That's the hard part. Playing three notes with the right hand evenly.
As a drummer you need to always do any exercise forwards and backwards plus sideways. (i.e. don't play the two snare drum hits after you say 4) That means if you lead with you right hand on the hi hat, (with your arms crossed as your left is hovering over the snare.) switch them. Have your left hand on the hi hit so your arms are open with the left hand hovering about the snare drum. Play the double notes only on the bass drum and hit the snare on 2 (and also on the ) 4. When I say practice it means this exercise alone could consume more than a couple hours on each variation. If you want to work on speed, but don't want to put a lot of time into it, to get the same results. Count the 1 2 3 4 and don't play. Only hit the double notes on in between the 1 2 3 4. Break it down, Hit the 1 on the hi hat or ride cymbal and the two quick notes after. Do this until your super fast. Then hit the hi hat or ride on the 1 (and also on the ) 2.
Now you can either play the cymbal on the 1 hit the snare with the opposite hand and then hit the 2 with the lead hand. After this, repeat. The other way is to completely count out the remanding notes before you play the exercise again. Either way when you can play it lighting fast, then move onto the next segment. Just like Martial Arts, so too are the ways of drumming. Play 8th notes instead of quarter notes, so the double's in between are 16th notes. If your coming down on the snare on the 4 and not playing the doubles after that 4 do the same on the 2. The combinations are endless.
Now here is an example of how this is used.
Say your at an open mike night at the Bridge Street Tavern in Augusta Maine. The band is playing "Proud Mary," ( the C.C.R. version, not the faster Ike and Tina Turner, but if you practiced enough, then do it on both.) There is a break between the Words: "Big Wheel keep on turning." At this point you want to play what is called a 'flam" That is hitting one stick while it is hovering, ( in this case the snare drum.) like either 1/2 inch to 1 inch or 1 1/2 inches above the intended surface being hit. The other drum stick should have the tip right about the same area as your ear. One's high and the other is low. They come down at the same time. Due to distance they don't come down exactly on time together. This difference is sound is what makes it called a flam. So you do two flam's. If the left stick was the low stick at the start of the flam, it ends up as the high stick on the second flam. Then with the right hand you hit the snare, the left hand hits one of the upper toms, and the right hand moves to hit the floor tom and the bass drum ends it. So that's two flam's and four notes played after it. (For a good example see Iron Maiden's "flight of Icarus." for another variation see two on the high hat and the same drum tom fill on Ozzy Osbourne's "Crazy Train") Now since you can't hit the cymbal because the singer is coming back in with the words "Proud Mary..." You hit the bell of the ride and do a few of those quick snares in between. You can have your bass drum hit practically every note the bas player is using and have a syncopated ride cymbal and the quick double 8th or 16 notes acting as triplets throughout the song. Just don't hit your crash cymbal when the singer comes in and don't do a drum solo when the guitarist is doing a solo.
